Rules Reminder:
Preferred Lies
Traditionally, “preferred lies” means a golfer can lift a golf ball that is in the fairway and move it up
to six inches in any direction (but not closer to the hole). At Dooleys Social Golf Club, this rule applies despite the Local Rules of the golf club.
However, from time to time, the fairway is not entirely clear (e.g. this often occurs at some holes at Woodville). Where this is the case, Dooleys golfers are permitted to lift a golf ball that is between the tree line (however not underneath the canopy of a tree) and move it up to six inches in any
direction (but not closer to the hole). This rule is designed to promote fair play. It should also be noted that if – and only if – you are informed upon arrival at a golf course that the
“preferred lies are through the green” (note: this will most often be on wet days) will a player be entitled to prefer the lie of the ball when the ball lies on a closely-mown area
through the green. The lowest handicapper in the group shall to the adjudicator of the application of the above rule to
his or her group.
Out of Bounds
Ordinarily, if your ball is lost out of bounds you must play another ball from the spot where the last
shot was played, under penalty of one stroke, i.e. stroke and distance. If, after playing your shot, you think your ball may be lost out of bounds you should play a provisional ball. You must announce that it is a provisional ball and play it before you go forward to search for the original ball.
Alternatively, under Dooleys rules, Dooleys golfers are permitted to instead under penalty of two strokes, drop a new ball within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than: the point where the ball last crossed out of bounds.
Should you instead play a provisional ball and if the original ball is lost (other than in a water hazard) or out of bounds, you must continue with the provisional ball, under penalty of one stroke. If the original ball is found in bounds within 5 minutes, you must continue play of the hole with it,
and must stop playing the provisional ball. Where there is a risk of slow play, the lowest handicapper in the group may inform the relevant golfer that they must apply the ‘Dooleys rule’ and take the two stroke penalty option. Despite the above, we must remember that this is first and foremost a SOCIAL golf club. In the Dooleys Social Golf Club our number one priority is to enjoy the game with our fellow golfers so,
whilst I ask you to be mindful of these two rules when you are playing, there is no need to take a strict interpretation of these rules and our only ask is that you play the game honestly.
From our Captain
Stuart Hurley

Game Recognition Badges:
Recently several people queried the awarding of badges for games played- 50, 100, 150 games etc. It was recently discussed at our golf meeting that our handicapper Adam Welton would update the records calculating each player’s game tally for all the games that they have played for Dooleys. Throughout the year, we will continue to update players milestones. It is planned to present badges at our AGM.
