BEFORE TEEING OFF – HELP THE COOKS

ON THE SICK LIST

ANNE DELANEY has not been well since before the Presentation Evening on the Saturday evening following the presentation she was taken to the emergency section at Auburn hospital and admitted. ANNE was completely exhausted and was very weak, dehydrated, not eating, had no energy, was unable to eat and was terrible gastric. I saw ANNE on Tuesday and found her a little better and on the road to recovery. She had had her first bit a solid food that day. ANNE is a determined person she will make a full recovery but needs plenty of rest, help and support.

ANNE we all hope you will make a full recovery and will soon be back serving tea and coffee to her faithful clientele.

RETURED PLAYER

KYLE BANFIELD played two games with us towards the end of 2015 and now has made a welcome return to play his third game with the DOOLEYS Social Golf Club. We welcome back KYLE and hope he will become a regular player with us and he just might as he shared in winning first prize with IAN BARBER.

KYLE is friends with IAN’s daughter and he played his third game with us off a provisional handicap of 36 and finished with 43 Stableford points. This may entice him back.

WE NEED NEW PLAYERS

CAPTAIN’s CORNER

At the commencement of the 2018 golf year, I would like to recap on some golf rules that are specific to the Dooleys Social Golf Club:

Preferred Lies

Traditionally, "preferred lies" means a golfer can lift a golf ball that is in the fairway and move it up to six inches in any direction (but not closer to the hole). At Dooleys Social Golf Club, this rule applies despite the Local Rules of the golf club.

However, from time to time, the fairway is not entirely clear (e.g. this often occurs at some holes at Woodville). Where this is the case, Dooleys golfers are permitted to lift a golf ball that is between the tree line (however not underneath the canopy of a tree) and move it up to six inches in any direction (but not closer to the hole). This rule is designed to promote fair play. It should also be noted that if – and only if – you are informed upon arrival at a golf course that the “preferred lies are through the green” (note: this will most often be on wet days) will a player is entitled to prefer the lie of the ball when the ball lies on a closely-mown area through the green.

The lowest handicapper in the group shall to the adjudicator of the application of the above rule to his or her group.

Out of Bounds

Ordinarily, if your ball is lost out of bounds you must play another ball from the spot where the last shot was played, under penalty of one stroke, i.e. stroke and distance.

If, after playing a shot, you think your ball may be lost out of bounds you should play a provisional ball. You must announce that it is a provisional ball and play it before you go forward to search for the original ball. Alternatively, under Dooleys rules, Dooleys golfers are permitted to instead under penalty of two strokes, you may drop within two club-lengths of, and not nearer the hole than: the point where the ball last crossed out of bounds.

Should you instead play a provisional ball and if the original ball is lost (other than in a water hazard) or out of bounds, you must continue with the provisional ball, under penalty of one stroke. If the original ball is found in bounds within 5 minutes, you must continue play of the hole with it, and must stop playing the provisional ball.

Where there is a risk of slow play, the lowest handicapper in the group may inform the relevant golfer that they must apply the ‘Dooleys rule’ and take the two stroke penalty option.

Despite the above, we must remember that this is first and foremost a SOCIAL golf club. At Dooleys Social Golf Club our number one priority is to enjoy the game with our fellow golfers so, whilst I ask you to consider the above when you are playing, there is no need to take a strict interpretation of these rules and our only ask is that you play the game honestly.

Happy golfing,

ANNA RYAN

JOKE OF THE MONTH

DRINKING & GOLF

A man was walking down the street when he was accosted by a particularly dirty and shabby-looking homeless man who asked him for a couple of dollars for dinner.

The man took out his wallet, extracted ten dollars and asked, "If I give you this money, will you buy some beer with it instead of dinner?"

"No, I had to stop drinking years ago," the homeless man replied.

"Will you spend this on green fees at a golf course instead of food?" the man asked.

"Are you NUTS!" replied the homeless man. "I haven't played golf in 20 years!"

"Well," said the man, "I'm not going to give you money. Instead, I'm going to take you home for a hot shower and a terrific dinner cooked by my wife."

The homeless man was astounded. "Won't your wife be furious with you for doing that?

The man replied, "That's okay. It's important for her to see what a man looks like after he has given up drinking and golf!"
